Southern Arizona Border Health Careers Opportunity Program (SABHCOP)

How do I become a member of SABHCOP?
A student enrolled at a participating middle school or high school can become a member by contacting SABHCOP or their respective facilitator from that school’s SABHCOP health club. High school students must complete and return two short forms to the facilitator. The student must complete the High School Application Form and a Family Information Form that the student’s parent or guardian must sign. If a high school student does not attend any of these schools and wishes to join SABHCOP, they may contact Mr. Miguel Vasquez at (520) 626-7946, ext. 207 or by e-mail at miguelv@u.arizona.edu. College students should contact SABHCOP directly to enroll in the program and find out more about the college health club that will form this year.

What types of activities could I do in the SABHCOP health clubs?
For middle school students, the focus of the SABHCOP health club is the summer enrichment program. SABHCOP health clubs offer a wide variety of services to high school students. This includes disseminating information to students in the health club meetings on admissions, financial aid, and health awareness issues. Monthly guest presentations from various professionals in health care and allied sciences provide insight into a career in the health field. Students can also participate in Saturday Academies throughout the school year, which provide valuable skill building and preparation skills to become a health professional. Interested students stay in contact with SABHCOP through an e-mail list that informs them of University of Arizona student events and summer programs such as Med-Start, New Start and PREP.

How will I find out about health club meetings and Saturday Academies?
Your high school facilitator will provide some form of announcement or schedule to you on meetings and upcoming SABHCOP events. Flyers mailed out announcing upcoming Saturday Academies contain the date, time and location information. For photos of our recent Saturday Academies, please see our Photos page.

How long do health club meetings last?
Each facilitator schedules meetings at the participating school. Generally the clubs meet every two weeks and can meet during lunchtime or after school. Clubs can choose to meet more often, if desired.

Are there SABHCOP health club officials?
Yes, each of the respective clubs has a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. Each club also has committees to recruit guest speakers and organize fundraising events for club activities.
