ACTIVITIES FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS
The following activities are available to students of Southern Arizona middle schools.  Contact a SABHCOP representative for more information.

Commitment to Underserved Populations (CUP)
Medical students teach the structure and function of the heart and eyes in middle schools in underserved areas in Tucson and rural areas in Southern Arizona. The medical students serve as mentors and role models to the middle school students. The purpose of the program is to show them that science can be interesting and fun and to encourage students to think about pursuing careers in the health care field. Opportunities are given for the adolescent students to ask questions about university and healthcare careers.

Math in Medicine
Students learn how math is used in the health fields by utilizing a clinical case to obtain medical information. Basic functions like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are highlighted.

Academic Summer Enrichment Program
This four-week program seeks to strengthen mathematical, science, as well as reading skills among students that are interested in a health career. The program includes chemistry experiments—with an introduction to glassware—and biology, which includes an introduction to the human body and dissections. Other program features include hands-on mathematics, such as patterns, fractions, arithmetic, and pre algebra, and reading time that focuses on finding book themes.
